Overcoming Phobias

Many of us have irrational fears about many things. For those people who suffer from phobias the fear feels very real even though they know that this behavior is irrational.

For some of us the fear of going to the dentist is so great that we put off going until our teeth are dropping out or we are in severe pain. Of course, the fact that we eventually go to the dentist when we know we have problems just re-enforces the fear. It is likely that the dental procedure will be long and uncomfortable and the reasoning behind the fear just gets greater. If only we went for regular checkups when there is a high likelihood that we would not require any uncomfortable treatment, maybe we could overcome the fear.

There are many fears that are borne out of a bad experience. You may be afraid of spiders because someone threw them at you when you were a child or told you horrific stories about them. A lot of otherwise rational people have a fear of flying. This is not because the airlines have a lot of crashes or any safety issues, after all air crashes are only reported because they are rare, it is irrational fear that grips you. Some people fear hospitals and medical procedures. Maybe they had a lot of hospital treatment as a child and the fear stays with you, or maybe it is because you are frightened of the outcome. Even though you will have been talked through the whole procedure and assured there is very little risk, you are still anxious.
To overcome these fears and anxiety would make your experience so much better. It would mean that you have control over your life and don’t feel there are things you can’t do because you are frightened.

Many people have found that meditation and guided imagery healing can empower them to take control of their lives and overcome their fears. Focusing on positive thoughts, rather than the fear, can put you back in control. The ability to put your mind into a calm state can be beneficial to your health too. Staying calm will help to lower your blood pressure and reduce the strain on your heart.
