In these days of high tech gadgets you may think reading a map is extinct. A lot of people have a sat nav car gadget. A device that tells you where to go, how long it will take you to get there and re route you if you go wrong.

If you are ‘old school’ you may prefer to use a map to plot your route, but don’t knock the Sat Nav Car gadget until you’ve tried it. Although, I suspect that there are many people out there who can’t read a map, it is useful to know how to. A car atlas is usually under a fiver so it’s a good investment to keep one in your car for emergencies. Your sat nav may not be able to connect to a signal so you do, at least, need an idea of where you are going. If you use your sat nav in more than one car, you need to be aware that some vehicles with heat reflecting windscreens do not cope well with the satellite signal.

However, there are many good points to having a sat nav in your car. If you are travelling alone, it is very useful to have a sat nav telling you which road to take so that you don’t have to keep stopping and looking at the map. Also, if you happen to need to wear glasses to read, it means that not only do you have to stop to look at the map but you have to find your glasses too!

One of the best points about a sat nav is that it tells you what lane to be in and makes driving through towns so much easier. It will also tell you if you are over the speed limit and most sat navs will beep at speed cameras.

In today’s world we seem to have more technology than you can shake a stick at. And shake a stick at them we do. Nearly every electrical item in our home comes with a remote control. It is no wonder that we are turning into couch potatoes as we don’t have to move to control anything, we just need to reach for the remote controller.

Of course there is good and bad in everything. It is great that we have the convenience of the remote control and that we don’t have to keep getting up to turn the TV over. On the other hand, repetitive strain injury could occur to the man of the house who can’t watch one channel for more than 2 seconds! Perhaps the exercise in getting up and down so frequently would be beneficial and stop him turning into the fat remote controller, to coin a phrase from the Thomas the Tank Engine series.

All joking apart, we do have a lot of Remote Controller in the average house. We have been used to having one for our TV for years, and then there is one for your satellite or cable box, another for your DVD player and another for your hi-fi. Even your iPod dock comes with a remote controller. You may live in a really high tech house and control your lights with remote and even your curtains. How often have you picked up the wrong remote and the one you want is still in the cupboard or across the room?

The answer to all these multitude of remote controllers is to get one that will do the job of the many. The Universal remote control is the answer. A Universal Remote Control is one controller that will operate all your home entertainment systems.

What do I need to do when UK TV goes Digital?

The digital switchover is confusing to a lot of people, not least because different areas are switching at different times. Many people don’t see why the change will affect them so I hope this will help.

Digital switchover will affect anyone who watches a TV through an aerial. The aerial receives transmissions via a transmitter in your area to give you your television programmes. There are more than 1,150 transmitters in 80 groups. These groups will gradually switch to digital transmissions so that you can receive digital programmes instead of analogue (what we have now) programmes. Digital TV will have more channels, about 20 rather than just BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, C4, C5 as we do now.

Within the 80 groups of transmitters there is a main transmitter and local relay transmitters. If you are able to receive transmissions from a main transmitter it is likely that you will receive about 40 channels. You may live in an area where you get signals from more than one transmitter so you may get a better signal from one more than the other and also may get more programmes.

It may be that your aerial does not receive the transmissions well and it might need to be replaced, but wait to see if it’s necessary before changing it.
There is an aerial test page on Teletext page 284 so you can find out if its likely you will need a new aerial.

If you do need to have a new aerial installed use a Registered Digital Installer. Look for the digital tick logo, this means that they have been properly trained and security checked.

Your TV may not be able to receive the digital signal. If you have a new TV with Freeview built in then you will be ok. If not you will need to get a Digibox that will convert your TV to accept Freeview (digital TV programmes). When buying a digibox look for the digital tick logo so that you know it will be ready to receive signals after the switchover. Also check the connections you have on your TV. Most TV’s have a SCART socket but if yours doesn’t then you need to get a digibox with a RF modulator built in.

If you use a recorder to record one channel while you watch another then you should think about buying a digital recorder that will convert your TV as well.

Voice Recorders and Dictaphones

Where the old style Dictaphones would tape your diction for you, the new digital voice recorders have an internal memory that can be down loaded to a PC or Mac. With the ability to store far more audio than the old tape style, the digital voice recorder has great advantages.

If your primary use is to record lectures and meetings, you will need a voice recorder with enough memory and battery power to keep going for a long session. Some voice recorders come with a long play option, although as you would expect you might lose some quality in the long play setting.

The voice recorder needs to be able to be downloaded to your PC or Mac via a USB cable. This allows you to transfer the recordings and keep them on CD or archive them on your PC.

Some voice recorder are compatible with voice to text software and this may well be an excellent option for you. You would practically be able to do your secretary’s job for her.

Other software that is available are those which allow you to transfer recordings direct to e-mail. This would be an invaluable tool for doctors, lawyers, reporters and any one who needs large amounts of voice recordings.
